Signs Your Sewer Line Needs Professional Attention

The consequences of a sewer line problem can quickly escalate from minor annoyances to major, unsanitary disasters. Addressing these potential issues as quickly as possible helps prevent extensive property damage, costly cleanups, and significant health hazards. Ignoring the warning signs can lead to widespread backups, pipe bursts, and expensive emergency repairs.

Don’t wait to schedule a service appointment if you notice any of the following signs of a sewer line problem:

  • Wastewater backups in fixtures. The most alarming sign of a sewer line problem is when wastewater backs up out of your drains, showers, or toilets. This unsanitary event means the main line is completely blocked or severely compromised, causing sewage to reverse flow into your property.
  • Multiple clogged drains or toilets. If you experience frequent or simultaneous clogs in multiple drains, or if several toilets in your home or business refuse to flush properly, it often indicates a blockage in your main sewer line. All your drains eventually connect to this primary line, so widespread issues suggest a problem at a deeper, central point.
  • Sewer odors. A persistent and strong smell of sewage coming from your drains, yard, or basement is a serious sign of a sewer line issue. This unpleasant odor indicates that wastewater or sewer gases are escaping from a crack, blockage, or break in your line.
  • Gurgling noises from drains or toilets. When you run water in a sink or flush a toilet, gurgling sounds from other drains or fixtures can point to an obstruction in your sewer line. Air trapped by a blockage often causes these noises as water tries to pass through.
  • Lush, green patches in your yard. If you notice unusually lush, green, or overgrown patches of grass in your yard, especially near where your sewer line runs, there may be an underground leak. Wastewater acts as a natural fertilizer and makes the grass above a leaking pipe grow faster and greener than the surrounding area.
  • Indents or puddles in your yard. Similarly, sunken areas or consistent puddles in your lawn, particularly along the path of your sewer line, may indicate a broken or collapsed pipe underground. The escaping water can wash away soil, creating depressions or saturated spots on the surface.
  • Foundation cracks, settling, or shifting. A leaking sewer line can saturate the soil around your property's foundation and cause it to shift, settle, or even crack. This compromises the structural integrity of your building. You should have our professionals investigate for potential sewer issues when you see new or expanding cracks.
  • Rodent or pest infestations. Damaged sewer lines provide easy entry points for rodents, insects, and other pests seeking water and shelter. An increase in pest activity in your home or business, could mean a compromised line.

How Does Trenchless Sewer Repair and Replacement Work?

When someone finds out that they need a sewer line repair or replacement, they often assume that their landscaping will be destroyed. Thanks to trenchless technology, this is no longer the case. We can now fix or replace damaged pipes with little to no digging, saving your landscaping and minimizing disruption. It's a much more efficient and less invasive way to deal with buried sewer line problems.

Our team at R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc. uses video cameras to inspect the interiors of your sewer line pipes and locate problems. Then, there are two main ways we typically accomplish trenchless sewer repair and replacement.

For targeted repairs, we can use pipe lining. This method involves digging one or two small access points, usually at the beginning and end of the damaged pipe section. We then insert a flexible, resin-coated fabric tube into the existing damaged pipe. This tube is then inflated, pressing the resin against the inside walls of the old pipe. The resin hardens, creating a brand-new, durable pipe within the old one. It's like relining the pipe from the inside, forming a seamless, strong new pipe that can last for decades, often without removing the old one. We use specialized equipment to monitor the curing process to confirm the new liner bonds correctly.

Second, for full replacements, we may use a technique called pipe bursting. Again, we only need to dig small access holes. We feed a new pipe with a special bursting head attached through the old, damaged pipe. As the new pipe moves forward, the bursting head shatters the old pipe and pushes its fragments into the surrounding soil. This simultaneously pulls the new pipe into place, creating a completely new, seamless sewer line without the need for a massive trench. This method is incredibly efficient for replacing severely collapsed or damaged pipes.
