Tips on How to Keep Warm During the Cold Months

Mark J. Biel • December 31, 2018

Keeping your homes warm in the winter should not be costly or leave you broke. One way of doing this is to perform regular air duct cleaning to prevent the build-up of dirt that can slow the process of heating and ventilation. Aside from that, though, here are a few tips on how to keep your home’s air temperature comfortable during the cold months:

Tips on How to Keep Warm During the Cold Months

Warm Activities

To keep warm in your home, you can decorate with warm implements. Place cotton fabric sheets on your bed, rugs and mats on the floor, insulated curtains for your windows and some warm blankets on your sofa. And don’t forget to open your curtains throughout the day to allow the sun’s light to warm your whole house. During the night, close the curtains to trap the heat that was collected during the daytime.

Regular Filter Changes

The heater in your home runs hot air into your home. This hot air passes through a filter in order to ensure the air is particle-free. A dirty filter makes your heat pump work more by having to pump harder to get the air through. This can lead to your heater generating higher energy costs, and even early mechanical failure. This is why HVAC maintenance is very important. It should also be noted that obstructions of your heating vents should also be removed, in order to ensure that the warm air passes into your home unimpeded.

Minimize the Use of Kitchen Fans

Most homes have hoods and exhaust fans in their kitchen, in order to reduce the lingering smell of cooking and to channel smoke away from the home interior. However, these fans also tend to suck the air out, which also includes the warm air inside your home. Try to use them only when necessary.

Have a Professional Check-Up

Keep your heat pump and furnace running at peak performance by having it tuned up and assessed by a professional contractor at least once a year. You may be in need of HVAC repair without even knowing it.
