Sewer Backups: What Causes Them and How to Prevent Them
Mark J. Biel • March 13, 2020
Now that winter’s over, you don’t have to worry about frozen pipes causing a sewer backup. Keep in mind, however, that a sewer backup can happen at any time of the year, including during a season with weather conditions as ideal as spring.
How do you know if there’s a problem with your sewer lines? The heating repair experts at R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating list the causes of a sewer backup below:
Signs of a Sewer Backup
You’ll know there’s a problem with your sewer lines if you notice any of the following early warning signs:
- Gurgling noises whenever water goes down the drain
- Slow-draining sinks and tubs
- A foul odor coming from the drains
If you notice any of these early warning signs, it’d be a good idea to have a plumber check your sewer pipes.
The Causes of a Sewer Backup
What are the usual culprits behind a sewer backup?
- Dirt and debris washed away by snowmelt
- Fat, oils and grease poured down the drain
- Overgrown trees encroaching upon sewer pipes
- A poorly-designed sewer system
- Wear and tear due to age
- Broken pipes
Keep in mind that this list isn’t exhaustive. The only way to pinpoint and fix the exact cause of a sewer backup is to have a contractor inspect your plumbing so they can then conduct drain and sewer repairs.
Preventing Sewer Backups
Factors such as flooding and loosened soil can also cause sewer pipes to back up, but these problems are out of your control. Still, there are plenty of ways to prevent some of rhe other issues.
What can you do to prevent your sewer pipes from backing up? Here are some prevention tips:
- Don’t flush anything other than toilet paper down the toilet
- Dispose of grease properly
- Avoid placing hard-to-grind items in the garbage disposal
- Have an experienced plumber routinely inspect your plumbing system
