How to Lower Your Water Heater Bill
Mark J. Biel • February 7, 2022
Water heating can be seen as an expensive necessity. This is why many homeowners go to great lengths to minimize their heating and other utility costs while still keeping their families comfortable throughout the winter. Despite this, they often find that it’s still higher than usual, and the immediate culprit could be their water heater. In this post, the leading drain and sewer repair expert, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc, shares how you can lower your water heater bill.
- Lower the thermostat. Try to remember where your water heater is located and check exactly what temperature the water heater is set to. If your thermostat is set above 120 degrees Fahrenheit, lower it a few notches. Keep in mind that you can save 3-5% per month for every 10 degree reduction. This will also prevent your family from accidentally scalding themselves with hot water.
- Take care of leaky faucets. If you have a leaky faucet that you haven’t gotten around to fixing, now is a great time to call on your plumbing repair expert, as this will contribute to your energy savings. Remember that a faucet with a slow leak can waste around 3000 gallons of water a year, which is no small number. If it’s coming from the tap, not only are you paying for wasted water, but for the energy to heat it up as well.
- Use low-flow showers. If you’re getting a bathroom upgrade, consider changing out your old plumbing fixtures. If you have showerheads or faucets created before 1992, swap them out for low-flow models, which are more efficient since they use half as much water.
- Minimize hot water usage. Try to take shorter showers, run your dishwasher only when it’s full and clean your laundry with cold water. These small steps will go a long way in helping you save on your monthly utility bills.
