Debunking Common Plumbing Myths

Debunking Common Plumbing Myths

Mark J. Biel • August 10, 2020

Taking care of plumbing, cooling and  heating repair s is probably not the most glamorous part of being a homeowner, but it’s certainly important. When your plumbing works well, you don’t necessarily notice it straight away. However, the moment your pipes show signs of a problem, it’s definitely hard to ignore. Plumbing is one of those things that work in the background but contribute immensely to your comfort and quality of life.

It’s due to the unpopularity of plumbing that there are still many things homeowners don’t understand about it. This has created a web of myths and misconceptions that, if believed, could prove harmful to your system. Here our skilled, experienced plumbers at R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating shed some light on these plumbing myths so you can avoid falling victim to them.

It’s okay to flush bleach down the drain.  Unless you’re prepared to handle an emergency  drain and sewer repair , avoid flushing excessive amounts of bleach and bleach-containing tablets down the drain. Your pipes can handle small amounts, but don’t make this a habit.

Wipes are flushable.  Despite the claims written on their packaging, “flushable” wipes shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet, as they can clog your drain pipes and cause your toilet to malfunction. This rule should be extended to diapers, feminine hygiene products and other similar items as well.

Grease Is fine for sinks.  Talk to your plumbing and  air conditioning repair  professional about installing and maintaining a grease trap for your kitchen sink. Grease and oil are common causes of pipe clogging, and contrary to popular opinion, cannot be washed down with hot or boiling water.
