Can Snow and Ice Damage Your HVAC?

Mark J. Biel • December 9, 2019

The build-up of snow and ice on your HVAC system’s outdoor components can cause major problems for you indoors. In this post, R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc. describes some of the common ways that they can do serious damage to your HVAC system, and our heating repair experts also offer simple steps to prevent it.

Restricted Airflow

Ice and snow buildup around, on or in your HVAC system makes it harder for air to flow. This results in ice buildup at the intake as well as exhaust vents. In some cases, ice forms in the piping that leads from the condenser to the system inside, though more often we’ll see it on the exhaust ports where air from inside the house circulates back outside. In both cases, the system has to work much harder due to limited airflow. This condition can cause your unit to short-circuit and burn out earlier than it should.

Refreezing and Expansion

Melting snow and ice can puddle around the exterior HVAC components. Water can then seep into the internal valves and other parts of your unit, which can cause corrosion, malfunctions and even fires. When it re-freezes, your pipes may become encased in ice, which can cause an emergency shutdown that cuts off heat to your home. Let our air conditioning repair experts clear your HVAC system of blockages.

Icicles

Your exterior HVAC components may be situated under a rain gutter. Big, heavy icicles can form on the gutters, then break off and crash down right onto your HVAC unit. This can damage the cabinet, along with the electronics and sensitive equipment inside. Be sure to clear away the icicles hanging above your exterior equipment before they can cause damage.
