5 Signs You Need to Install a Water Softener
Mark J. Biel • November 19, 2019
A common request our plumbing repair technicians here at R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, Inc. receive is for a water softener installation. New Mexico homeowners ask for this service when they’ve been having issues caused by hard water that make their daily water use frustrating.
If you don’t know what hard water is, it’s basically tap water that has a high mineral content. This can cause damage to dishware and appliances, and can even serve as a breeding ground for bacteria. If you know you have hard water, you should take appropriate action and install a water softening system as soon as possible.
Here are some signs to watch out for that could indicate a hard water problem:
Faded clothes – Clothing items and sheets that are repeatedly washed using hard water tend to turn gray and become faded. Additionally, the excessive mineral buildup in the material may also cause difficulty when washing, as well as a scratchy texture.
Bathtub and sink stains – Evaporated hard water leaves behind calcium and magnesium deposits. When not attended to, these deposits can leave behind stains on porcelain bathtubs and sinks.
Dry hair and skin – An excess of minerals in hard water can settle on your hair and skin when you shower, leading to dryness. Since soap doesn’t dissolve easily in hard water, it doesn’t work well to clean the minerals off.
Buildup on appliances – Hard water can also result in limescale on appliances, which looks like a hard, chalky substance. This is commonly seen on washing machines, shower heads and coffee pots.
Increased water pressure – High water pressure occurs with hard water due to stocked scale deposits inside the pumps, which cause a significant reduction in volume. This can also lead to more frequent leaks.
Water softeners effectively combat hard water by replacing harmful minerals with sodium ions. This causes water to “soften”, thus protecting the plumbing and making cleaning easier.
