3 Winter Care Tips for Your Plumbing System

3 Winter Care Tips for Your Plumbing System

Mark J. Biel • March 7, 2019

A lot of plumbing problems occur at the most inopportune times because those times generally coincide with seasons that put a lot of stress on your pipes–like winter, for example. While there’s no avoiding the harsh cold of winter, you can prevent premature drain and sewer repair by providing your plumbing system with some preventative TLC.

Here are a few things you can do:

Don’t Let Leaks Go Unattended

Sure, a little leak is a lot less serious than full-on flooding, but your water meter is still running, and all those little drips mean you’re racking up a bill for something you’re not using. Not to mention that neglected leaks can leave puddles on the floor that can be a safety hazard. If you’re not careful, what was once a small problem can quickly become a much bigger concern that will add to your winter worries. Don’t let leaks go unattended: call a trusted area plumber like R. A. Biel Plumbing & Heating right away.

Don’t Set Home Temperatures Too Low

If you’re going to be away for some time over the winter, resist the urge to turn your heating system down too far. While It’s commendable to be making an effort to save energy, this can also greatly increase the chances of your pipes freezing and rupturing. To be on the safe side, plumbing and air conditioning repair professional R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating recommends setting your home’s temperature no lower than 45 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is low enough to help you save on energy, but at the same time high enough to protect against frozen pipes.

Turn Off Outdoor Water Valves

Temperatures can quickly drop below freezing during winter, increasing the risks of your water pipes bursting at home. You can lower these risks by turning off all outdoor water valves for the season and insulating pipes that are prone to freezing with towels or foam.
