3 Things You Need to Know Before Buying an Air Purifier
Mark J. Biel • February 15, 2021
If you’re like many people today who are spending more time at home due to the pandemic, you may also be looking into investing in an air purifier as a way to keep your indoor environment cleaner and reduce the threat of the virus. While it’s not a cure-all for improving indoor air quality, having one at home can help you and your family breathe a little easier.
R.A. Biel Plumbing & Heating, your local new heating system installation contractor, shares the following things you need to know before purchasing an air purifier.
Type of pollutants . Some air purifiers only filter out specific types of pollutants. They’re rated based on their capability to filter pollutants of different sizes. Although many of them are similar, some are slightly more effective at catching pet dander and dust than smoke, or vice versa. Thus, a household with pets inside the home requires a different type of air purifier than another household that deals with cigarette smoke.
Sizing the unit. Buying an air purifier is much like buying a new air conditioning unit—it must be the correct size relative to the room you want your device to clean. A small unit placed on top of a table in a big living space cannot do the job properly. A large, heavy-duty unit, meanwhile, will be too much for a small space.
Type of filter used. A typical air purifier has two filters, one that catches larger particles (pre-filter) and another that captures smaller pollutants (main filter). The latter comes in different varieties, including high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) , activated carbon or charcoal and ultraviolet (UV) light filters.
